Description
  • The contents of α- and β-bitter acids from hops harvested in the Czech Republic in 2010 have been evaluated. The sampling was done in all three growing areas – Žatec (73.8 % of the hop yard areas in the Czech Republic), Úštěk (12.5 %) and Tršice (13.6 %). The Saaz variety (ŽPČ) was cultivated on 87.2 % of the harvest areas, the Sladek variety on 5.2 %, Premiant variety on 5.5 % and the Agnus variety on 2.7 % of the harvest areas. The hops were analyzed in accordance with the Analytica-EBC, method 7.7 (HPLC) and all results are given in weight % in dry matter (DM). The average value for α-acids in the Saaz variety in the Czech Republic was 3.0 % (in the Žatec area 3.1 %, in the Úštěk area 3.1 % and in the Tršice area 2.5 %). The content of β-acids was 5.1 %. The content of α-acids was 0.9 % lower when compared to the year 2009 and 0.6 % lower when compared to the average of the last 17 years. The content of β-acids was 0.3 % higher when compared to the year 2009 and also to the long-term average. The average content of α-acids in the Sladek variety in the Czech Republic was 7.3 % and the content of β-acids was 6.4 %. The content of α-acids was in agreement with the harvest in 2009 and 0.6 % higher than the average of the last 6 years. The content of α-acids in the Premiant variety was 9.7 % and the content of β-acids was 6.8 %. The content of α-acids was 1.4 % lower when compared to the harvest in 2009 and approximately the same when compared to the average of the last 6 years. The content of α-acids in the Agnus variety was 11.2 % and the content of β-acids was 7.3 %. The content of α-acids was 2.4 % lower when compared to the harvest in 2009.
