Description
  • Weeds are very important harmful agents. In dependence on species range and occurrence intensity they have a negative impact especially on potato yield. Lower and medium weed occurrence results in 20 – 30% potato yield decrease; however, high weed occurrence could reduce yield by 85 %. Weeds compete with potato plants in regard to all growth and developmental conditions. They increase danger of plant and tuber disease infection, complicate harvest and increase mechanical damage of potatoes during harvest. Herbicide applications in field trials resulted in 27–117 % increase of potato yield in individual years compared to non-treated control. Potato yield derived from variants treated with reduced rates of herbicide active ingredients was comparable to variants with standard rates in all years. The trials indicated that reducing high generalized rates of herbicides is possible while maintaining weed control efficacy and potato yield and quality level.
