Description
(cs)
  • A yellow-pigmented Gram-negative bacterium, Chryseobacterium indologenes, was identified as a pathogen causing gradual perishing of the laboratory colony of the soft tick Ornithodoros moubata. The infection could be partially treated by addition cotrimoxazol (Biseptol 480) to the blood meal. The artificial infection of O. moubata and the hard tick Ixodes ricinus by infection feeding revealed that in contrast to the soft tick, the hard ticks are capable effectively eliminate the bacteria from its gut. Hard tick was also much more resistant to the intrahemocoelic injection of C. indologenes although hemocytes from both tick species displayed significant phagocytic activity against the bacterium. Thus C. indologenes has the potential to be a relevant comparative model for the study of tick immune reactions to transmitted pathogens.
