Description	In most studies on the adaptation of insects to low winter temperatures, the temporal sequence of the effects of photoperiod and temperature and their relative importance in cold hardening has been neglected. Analysis of several parameters of cold hardiness in a heteropteran, Pyrrhocoris apterus, revealed that the adaptation proceeds in two phases: (1) physiological signals trigger physiological and biochemical changes that (a) directly increase cold-hardiness and/or (b) are a prerequisite for (2) more robust cold hardening induced by temperature decrease. Analýza několika parametrů chladové odolnosti u ploštice Pyrrhocoris apterus ukázala, že adaptace probíhá ve 2 fázích: (1) fotoperiodické signály spouštějí fyziologické a biochemické změny, které (a) zvyšují přímo chladovou odolnost a/nebo (b) jsou předpokladem pro další zvýšení chladové odolnosti působením snížené teploty. Prvá fáze je zprostředkována endokrinním systémem a je spojena s indukcí diapauzy (cs)
