Description
  • Ecdyonurus austriacus Kimmins, 1958 is an arboreal element of Central European distributional type showing one of the smallest areas within Central European mayflies. Besides its area in the Austrian Alps, all localities of the E. austriacus are reviewed (altogether 5 localities from the Novohradské Mountains, one of them at the Austrian side and 7 from the Šumava Mountains). Exochorionic egg structures and larvae of the first instar are described for the first time At constant laboratory water temperatures, the embryogenesis lasts from 18 days (20 +- 1 degrees C) to about 65 - 75 days (10 +- 1 degrees C) and is blocked below 5 degrees C at the stage of anatrepsis. Larvae develop slowly during winter, half-grown (5-7 mm in body length), older (8-10 mm) and ready to emerge larvae (12-15 mm, black wing pads) start to appear in mid March, mid April and late May respectively. Simple seasonal univoltine 'winter' life cycle is suggested but apparently different larval growth rates in individuals arisen from
