Description
  • This study examines a discrete-time spatial individual-based model of a one-predator two-prey system where predators follow the Charnov's optimal diet selection model. Contrary to optimal foraging theory we assume that individual predators have only a local knowledge of prey population densities in the environment. Thus every predator follows prediction of the Charnov's model, ie it includes the less profitable prey type in its diet only provided that the density of the more profitable prey type decreases under certain threshold value. Because the moment at which predators change their diet is different for different predator individuals due to local variations in prey densities, the probability of acceptance of the less profitable prey type changes from the zero-one rule prediction of the optimal foraging theory to a sigmoid-like function. An analogous situation is faced when we consider switching sensu Murdoch.We also compare our results with some other switching functions used in literature.
