Description	Cyanobacterial picoplankton (CPP) and its colonial formations were studied in experiments with water from two ecologically widely different biotopes: eutrophic deep reservoir and shallow saline drainage evaporation pools in California, USA. Simple experiments were carried out to demonstrate the role of consumers and turbulence in formation and destruction of the CPP colonies. In a reservoir CPP assemblage submitted to the predation pressure of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) and of the whole zooplankton in dialysis bags, spherical solitary cells were consumed by all the predators. Rod-like cells were consumed by other zooplankton. Solitary cells grouped into secondary 'colonies'. Predation and bioturbation due to the life activity of Artemia franciscana in the experiments with water from saline pools also changed the assemblage. All the colonies and simple filaments were either consumed or destroyed. Only the rod-like unicellular morphotypes (Synechococcus) remained in water.
