Description	We adapted the amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) to examine the bacterial communities associated with the soil dwelling larvae of Penthetria holosericea (Diptera) and with vermicompost and earthworm (Eisenia andrei) gut content. Following DNA isolation and PCR amplification of the 16S rDNA, three restriction enzymes were used to generate ARDRA patterns. Resulting fragments were separated in a 1,5% agarose gel. When the universal eubacterial primers 63f and 1387r were used, the ARDRA patterns proved to be complex and difficult to resolve, although some minor differences were noted. The use of taxon specific PCR primers resulted in less complicated patterns and more differences in the band composition. The method is fast, cheap and useful in the characterization of bacterial communities.
