Description
  • Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and ice nucleation spectrometry (INS) are thermoanalytical techniques which have been successfully used in physiological studies to examine cold and desiccation resistance in plants and animals. This paper describes basic techniques and methods together with results from studies to examine the cold tolerance of Antarctic algae. The application of INS and DSC to quantify ice nucleation activity and identify antifreeze proteins in biological samples is discussed together with the effect of consuming terrestrial algae on the cold tolerance of Antarctic microarthropods. DSC is also used to distinguish osmotically active and inactive water in biological systems and the importance of water balance and freezing point to the survival of freeze tolerant organisms is outline.
