Description
  • The study compared sex-specific feeding rates of perch under and without the thread of pike predation. Aquarium experiments were conducted in high and low water transparency to also resemble recent changes in aquatic systems that led to worsened optical conditions. It has been hypothesised that 1) predation threat reduces the feeding rate of both sexes, but 2) the feeding rate of males will decrease more steeply than that of females and 3) the response of perch to predation threat will be weaker in low water transparency than in high water transparency. The results showed that the effect of the pike predation threat on the feeding rate of perch depends on water transparency, but likely not on sex. The lower feeding rate of male perch than that of females in favourable conditions for vision may be related to fundamental differences in sexual selection for energy allocation or risk-taking and vulnerability to predators.
