Description	Prey relations have always been intensively studied because of the interest in coccinellids as natural enemies of hemipteran pests (such as aphids and coccids) and mites. A great part of the chapter is dealing with prey specificity, often based on the effect of allelochemicals from plants, hosting the prey insects. This subchapter contains also a useful list of almost 400 experimentally proved essential foods, i.e. those enabling reproduction and development of larvae. A great progress made in behaviour studies is shown in the last subchapter, with stress on the recent findings on the oviposition deterring semiochemicals left by larvae. Adaptive dispersion of eggs and the resulting decrease in cannibalism is thus ensured.
