Description
  • Juvenile hormone (JH) was so named for its capacity to block metamorphosis of larvae to adults. Only when larvae attain an appropriate stage, a halt of JH secretion permits metamorphosis. JH acts through its receptor, the Methoprene-tolerant (Met) protein, whose target gene Kr-h1 blocks metamorphosis. In this study we discovered that the same molecular mechanism of JH action operates in evolutionarily very distant insects with complete (holometaboly) and incomplete (hemimetaboly) metamorphosis, and is therefore universal to insects. The common role of Kr-h1 in suppressing metamorphosis supports hypotheses on common evolutionary origin of larval and pupal stages in the two types of metamorphosis.
