  • Animal development involves movements and fusions of epithelia. During metamorphosis of Drosophila, the precursor cells of abdominal epidermis (histoblasts) divide and migrate while replacing larval epidermal cells (LECs), which must depart from the epithelium to allow histoblast fusion and formation of the adult epidermis. Regulation of this morphogenetic cell replacement is unclear. We have found that temporally misregulated activity of the transcription factor Atf3 prevents LEC extrusion by interfering with the Rho signaling, leading to increased adhesiveness of LECs that consequently obstruct the closure of the adult abdominal epithelium. To elicit this effect, Atf3 requires its binding partner Jun. Although dimerization between the two important regulatory bZIP proteins has been well-established in mammalian cell lines, our data for the first time demonstrate a developmental function for the Jun-Atf3 complex in vivo.
