Description
  • Postupná extrakční analýza sedimentů tří jezer v Maine, USA, ukázala, že Al:Fe a Al:P poměry v povrchových sedimentech dvou oligo až mesotrofních jezer byly vyšší než 3 a 25, což jsou prahové hodnoty bránící významnému uvolňování P ze sedimentu do vodního sloupce během anoxických podmínek v hypolimniu. Chemismus vody v hypolimniu těchto jezer skutečně potvrdil nízký obsah P. Třetí, eutrofní jezero má hodnoty uvedených poměrů nižší než prahové a dochází v něm k významnému uvolňování P ze sedimentů.
  • Sequential extraction of sediments from short cores from three lakes in Maine USA demonstrates that the ratios Al:Fe and Al:P for upper sediment for two oligo-mesotrophic lakes exceeds 3 and 25, the thresholds for preventing substantial release of P from sediments during hypolimnetic anoxia. Hypolimnetic water chemistry verifies this effect. The third lake, currently eutrophic, has values for the ratios that are below the thresholds and this lake has substantial release of P from recent sediment. The sediment characteristics remain relatively constant over the last 150+ years, indicating that the processes responsible for P retention have operated long before atmospheric acidification of watersheds. Photo-oxidation of Al-DOC and Fe-DOC in the lake, liberation of Al and Fe, precipitation of their hydroxides, adsorption of P by the hydroxides, and sedimentation are responsible for the changes in water quality and long-term sediment characteristics.
