Description
• Molecular studies on Drosophila melanogaster have identified a number of genes related to aging, but the hormonal regulation of a trade-off between life-span and fecundity is not understood. To unravel the physiological basis of the cost of reproduction, a new insect model the linden bug Pyrrhocoris apterus was employed. The paper reports the first experimental analysis of interactions among tissues, implicated in reproductive physiology, in relation to the regulation of life-span in an insect with a wild (non-manipulated) genotype. The data show that life-span and reproduction are linked by signals from the pars intercerebralis of the brain (presumably insulin-like peptides) and the corpus allatum (juvenile hormone), but, in contrast with the widely held view, neither production of eggs, nor ovary-signaling are costly to female longevity.
