  • Factors were examined that could be responsible for the predominance of Coccinella septempunctata (C7) in most habitats of the Palaearctic and for its successful invasion of the Nearctic Region. Two traits appear neutral. C7 is less polyphagous than Harmonia axyridis or Coleomegilla maculata : it cannot develop or reproduce on non-aphid food. Also the intraguild status of C7 is intermediate. However, the aspects of population plasticity are considered advantageous for C7; they evolved as an effective adaptation for predation on unpredictably occurring aphid populations. Most important are high mobility and eurytopy and the ability to temporarily suspend oviposition, combined with heterogenous voltinism and diapause tendencies. An absence of reproductive diapause in males and pre-hibernation mating are other significant adaptations, along with the tendency to produce offspring in excess of the carrying capacity of local food resources.

  • Slunéčko C. septempunctata je mimořádně hojné v mnoha biotopech Palearktu a úspěšně proniklo do Nearktické oblasti, kde snižuje hojnost některých místních druhů slunéček. Studie zvažuje, které biologické parametry úspěšnost umožňují. Některými vlastnostmi, jako jsou potravní specialisace nebo úspěšnost ve vnitrogildových vztazích, C. septempunctata pravděpodobně nevyniká nad jiné druhy. Autoři pokládají za daleko významnější silnou tendenci k disperzi, spolu s poměrně slabší vázaností na typ biotopu. Tato ekologická plasticita je zřejmě účinnou adaptací na využívání mšic jako kořisti. Pro většinu hojných mšic je typický časově a prostorově nepředvídatelný (a často jen krátkodobý) výskyt na jednotlivých biotopech. Velmi mobilní C. septempunctata může nacházet potravu při pohybu krajinou na různých biotopech. S touto potravní strategií souvisí i dlouhé období kladení, které může být při nedostatku potravy dočasně pozastaveno. (cs)
