These interactions are either trophic, when plants are used by invertebrates as food, or non-trophic, realized via environmental modifications, in which one organism affects the living conditions of other organism(s). Herbivory may affect the competition between plant species and thus plant succession. In contrast, plants affect the succession of invertebrates by providing them with a food source and modifying their environment. In this environmental modification, plant size, architecture and spatial organization of the plant cover play an important role. Soil invertebrates can also affect plant succession by exerting an effect on nutrient availability and other soil properties. (en)
