Description	When I was first approached to edit a review book on condensed matter physics, I did not anticipate that the field was about to explode, with the announcement of a series of remarkable new developments and advances. This review describes these recent developments in eight chapters written by leading international researchers in the field. The book is organized as follows: Chapter 1 Provides calculations of the band structure, density of states, imaginary and real parts of the frequency-dependent linear and nonlinear optical susceptibilities for the chalcopyrite compounds CuAlX2 (X=S, Se, Te) using the state-of-the-art full potential linear augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method. These compounds have direct band gaps. Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements of laser radiation show that these crystals exhibit high optical SHG effect. These crystals have potential application as nonlinear optical materials.
