| - Identifikace rysů ovlivňujících reprodukční výběr je hlavní výzvou behaviorální ekologie a evoluční biologie. Dominantnost samců často podmiňuje volbu samice před pářením, ale způsob, jakým jsou samice schopné rozpoznat hierarchický status samce, zůstává velmi spoře pochopen. U samců raka P. clarkii dochází během reprodukční sezóny k častým intra-sexuálním soubojům za účasti samice. Předpokládá se, že vítězové jsou samicemi upřednostňováni. Základní hypotézou bylo, že před volbou dominantního mezi zdánlivě identickými samci, by mělo být samici umožněno sledovat interakce mezi bojujícími samci. Proto testování této hypotézy, byly porovnávány odezvy samic (přítomných a nepřítomných soubojům samců) na dvojice samců (dominantní/podřízený). Výsledky jasně naznačují že sledování soubojů zvyšuje u samic schopnost rozpoznat dominantního samce od podřízeného. Samice sledující souboje samců následně častěji navštěvovaly dominantního samce a trávily v jeho blízkosti více času a projevovali se častějšími pre-kop (cs)

There was hypothesized that, before making a decision between two apparently identical males, females should be allowed to witness their agonistic interactions. To test this hypothesis, were compared the responses of bystander and naïve females towards a dyad of males (dominant/subordinate). The results are clear in showing that eavesdropping on agonistic interactions improves the female?s ability to recognize the dominant male over the subordinate.
