Description
  • The purpose of this study was to investigate whether Leuciscus cephalus, a fish routinely used to assess the quality of surface water in Czech Republic, is suitable to indicate the presence of endocrine-disrupting chemicals. A variety of anthropogenic pollutants may disrupt reproductive endocrine function by altering hormone pathways that regulate reproductive processes in wildlife. Vitellogenin (VTG), a precursor of egg yolk is synthesized and secreted in the liver in response to natural estrogens in female fish. Therefore, the presence of VTG in male fish is a useful biomarker to identify estrogenic activity of natural or anthropogenic substances in aquatic environment. Samples of fish muscle were collected on monitored sites of the Vltava river (Czech Republic) for chemical analyses of PCB, HCB, DDT and its metabolites, HCH, OCS. Vitellogenin (Vtg) concentration was measured in blood plasma of chub males (L. cephalus) using ELISA (Carp vitellogenin EIA kit, Biosense Laboratories, Norway). The resul
