Description
  • Nitrite is one of the most important toxicants to fish. Nitrite, a primary concern in fish hatchery with water reuse system, can accumulate to dangerous concentrations if biological filtration is compromised. The aim of this study was to verify the toxicity of nitrite for fish. In this study there were used tests of acute toxicity tested on Poecilia reticulata and laboratory experiments carried out on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Influence of nitrite on blood methemoglobin content was evaluated during laboratory experiments with Nile tilapia. The 96hLC50 values of NaNO2 for Poecilia reticulata range between 39 - 436 mg.l-1 depending on chloride concentrations (10 - 190 mg.l-1) and the relationship between these values is linear. Elevation of chloride concentration to the value of 250 mg.l-1 did not cause elevation of 96hLC50 value. The experiments carried out on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) showed: Only 3-h exposure to 36 mg.l-1 NO2- in chloride poor water (10 mg.l-1) - group 1 - cause
