Description
(cs)
  • The black carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus ) is a molluscophagous cyprinid fish native to the monsoon regions of mainland China, which was introduced into the Czech Republic with the aim as to supplement pond polycultures by the fish species capable to control the development of water snail Lymnaea populations as interhosts of eye-flukes Diplostomum spathaceum and to slow down the expansion of zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha. Water snails Planorbarius sp. were chosen as a model prey for laboratory studies of black carp grazing pressure. The prey size selectivity was evaluated with respect to mouth gape size (width) of black carp. Fish mouth gape width ranged between 2.8 to 6.65 mm, which corresponds to 6.94#1.12 (5.36-8.94) % SL. The presupposition of considerable grazing impact of 0+ black carp upon molluscs (snails) was confirmed in the laboratory tests. The mouth gape width can be considered as a good estimator of the largest snail that a particular fish can ingest, crush and swallow.
