  • Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead (Aristichthys nobilis) are filtrators on seston particles. Phytoplankton is usually considered as the most important food item for silver carp whilst in the diet of bighead, a considerable portion of zooplankton can be registered. In spite of huge volumes of water, which is passed through their filtering apparatuses, the impact of silver carp stocks upon water environment is not generally positive and differs under different conditions. Stocks of silver carp and bighead cause eutrophication tendencies in shallow waterbodies (= ichthyoeutrophication according to Opuszynski 1978) probably due to activation of phosphorus from stirred and ingested suspended organic matter. However in deep stratified reservoirs, silver carp and bighead do not enter hypolimnion, and suspended solids (including phytoplankton) ingested by their feeding activity (filtering) may be deposited in the form of excreta into sediments.
