  • In connection with the globalization and the spread of foreign sales chains onto regional markets the production of domestic food, its promotion and assertion on the domestic market is becoming a highly charged issue in many countries. The possibilities of domestically produced foodstuffs are from the perspective of national market protection rather limited. Producers and processors as well as vendors seek ways of offering this food on the market and effectively influence consumers? behaviour. Concerted research taking place on the Czech and Slovak food market and focused on the consumers' preferences when choosing food brings new possibilities for the creation of regional brands. A significant portion of consumers prefer locally made food; they are interested in the ingredients and health impacts. Safety, quality and support of domestic producers become substantial factors influencing the consumers? decisions. This work summarizes the results of joint Czech and Slovak questionnaire surveys that took place from 2006 to 2007 and dealt with the consumers? preferences on the food market, the protection of the domestic market in farming and food goods as well as means of promoting these products on the market.
