Description
  • Similarly to vertebrates, the tick ?blood?- the hemolymph - is also a vital part of the tick body. It constitutes the primary route of nutrient transport, maintains the osmotic pressure, transports hormones, and thus allows the hormonal regulation of the tick body, fights injuries and attacks pathogens with the help of hemocytes while allowing the dissemination of successfully surviving pathogens. As such, one would anticipate tremendous amount of information to be available about this system, considering the importance of ticks as vectors of severe infections and the cause of enormous financial loses. Knowledge of the ongoing processes in the tick hemolymph would allow the creation of safe new ways to deal with these dangerous arthropods.
