Description
  • This chapter focuses on the analysis of environmental impacts of the organic framing system and its comparison with the conventional one. There are five key areas of environmental impacts described - Soil fertility maintenance and improvement, Nutrient recirculation and prevention of foreign substance entry into agroecosystem, Water management in the landscape and water protection from pollution, Air quality improvement, GHG emission reduction and Genetic resources and biodiversity protection. The impacts on the air quality and GHG emission reduction are discussed more in details. This subchapter is based on currently carried studies on the GHG emissions within the organic and conventional farming systems, using the simplified LCA analysis. The whole process of life cycle assessment was processed in accordance with standards ISO 140. As a functional unit, one kg of production was chosen and results were related only to the impact category of climate change expressed by the indicator of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). Life cycle modelling includes all farm operations (agrotechnics, fertilizers, pesticides...), a farming phase includes also emissions resulting from nitrogen fertilizer application which were calculated using the IPCC methodology. For pre-farming operations, such as production of fertilizers, pesticides and fuel, the data from the Ecoinvent database was used. For the data processing, the SIMA Pro software was used. The ReCiPe Midpoint (H) Europe methodology was used as a characterization model. The outputs reflect the CO2e emission production within growing selected crops (respectively breeding selected animals) within the conventional and organic farming system and these systems are mutually compared.
