Description
  • This study showed that the application of Cu-based fungicides to hop fields resulted into soil Cu concentrations well above 150 mg kg-1. Soil pH proved to be the dominant factor influencing the vertical mobility of Cu in the studied soils. Chemical fractionation results showed that only a small portion of Cu (< 4.5%) was present in the most labile exchangeable soil fraction. Besides the residual fraction, Cu was mainly associated with the reducible soil fraction, probably because Cu-oxychloride was mainly applied. Surprisingly, low Cu concentrations were obtained during the oxidizable step (Cu bound to soil organic matter). Although not as extensive as other agricultural practices involving the application of Cu-fungicides (e.g., viticulture), hop production remains an important practice in several countries, and Cu contamination of the hop fields can be of environmental concern.
