Description	The Sokolov brown coal basin is a part of Podkrusnohorska panev (the Krusne hory Foothills Basin) in the north-west Czech Republic. The coal mining in this area dates back to the 17th century, with intensive development of the deep mining from the 19th century until the first half of the 20th century. At present, coal is exploited here in open-cast mines only and exhaustion of the Sokolov Basin is expected by 2035. As a direct result of terminating the mining, a process of successive and systematic reclaiming of the territory has been underway. In 1997, a complex environmental impact assessment of mining activity and consequent reclamations on the eastern part of Sokolov basin was carried out using the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) methodology. 12 years after this SEA document was elaborated, achievement of the concepts of the document above can be evaluated.
