Description
(cs)
  • The seasonal species and biomass distribution of coprophagous beetles of Scarabaeoidea participating in early dung decomposition was monitored on a sub-mountain dairy farm in the southern Bohemia. The monitoring was conducted using three pitfall traps baited by 1.5 l of fresh cow dung and exposed in the pasture for 7 days in five sampling periods from May to October 2006. In total, 19 species of Scarabaeoidea were identified in the samples expressing species-specific seasonal distribution and abundance. The late summer period revealed the period of the greatest potential for dung decomposition by beetles according to recorded high occurence of dung dweller Aphodius rufipes and to predicted feeding of its larvae. The adults of this species formed 82% of the dry body weight biomass in late summer sample. The highest dung burial activity might be expected since late summer due to nesting activities of large tunnelers Geotrupes spiniger and Geotrupes stercorarius. The spring period (May) was the other per
