Description
  • In Irena Dousková's work, the motif of the Shoah varies to a large extent. Very often it can be traced just as a hint or in a form of an implicit motif (Bez Karkulky, Někdo s nožem, Doktor Kott přemítá). In the last Dousková's prose work Darda, it appears in a repetitive way in a form of a dream about tsunami. Sometimes the motif of the Shoah emerges together with Goldstein / Freistein as the biological father (Goldstein píše dceři, Hrdý Budžes, Oněgin je Rusák, Darda). Significantly, Dousková does not concentrate on the description of extermination from the witnesses's point of view, but she stresses the state of mind of the so-called %22second generation%22 or %22children of the Holocaust%22. Thus, instead of a narration about the personal survival, the reader encounters with the above mentioned biological survival (Goldstein píše dceři; Čím se liší tato noc - short story Štěstí). Moreover, the survival in the memory of the others is also present., e. g. the Czech neighbours of the old Jewish lady continue to make effort not to forget the inconvenient part of our - sometimes only local - history (Čím se liší tato noc - short story Chuligán). In addition, Dousková shows another survival of this kind, however, it goes beyond the previous one, i. e. a survival of the Shoah in the collective memory in a form of a legend (O bílých slonech). It is necessary to add that the inconspicuous way the author fabricates such types of surviving the Shoa only reflects in the reader's mind subliminally. This reflection is intensified by the readers incorrectly stereotyping Dousková, similarly to above mentioned Poláček, as an author of humoristic texts.
