Description
  • The present study focuses on characterization of transformation processes and understanding of transformation phenomena in magnetron sputtered alumina coatings with different as-deposited structures. Phase transformation sequences with thermodynamic and kinetic data were systematically analyzed by means of differential scanning calorimetry and ex-situ X-ray diffraction. It was found that thermal stability of a pure gamma-phase as-deposited structure exceeds 1100 °C. On the contrary, an amorphous as-deposited structure is thermally stable to approximately 900 °C when the amorphous to gamma phase transformation starts proceeding. Independently of as-deposited structure, the metastable gamma phase transforms to the stable alpha phase at temperature of approximately 1200 °C. Further, it was shown that the changes in transformation enthalpies for all observed transformations are close to each other while the kinetic of the phase transformations is influenced by the as-deposited structure of the coatings.
