Description
  • The paper describes the homogenization approach to the cortical bone modeling featured by multi-level treatment. The homogenization of the Biot continuum with double porosity provides upscaling from the osteon level to the macroscopic scale, where some memory effects are the consequences of the microflow in the dual porosity. To obtain the material properties of the osteon matrix, the hierarchical two-level homogenization is proposed to upscale in two steps: from the scale of canaliculi to an intermediate scale of individually distinguishable lacunae, then to the level of the osteon matrix considered as the dual porosity which separates the Haverse/Volkmann vascular channels. The mathematical structure of the model is presented and some preliminary numerical illustrations are included.
