| - In this study, we focus on a formal classification of irregular burials in settlement pits dated to the Early Bronze Age in Central and south Moravia in the Czech Republic. The aim of this classification is to test the assumption that individual burials in settlement pits are the results of past populations? pragmatic actions, or of post-depositional processes in the case of isolated bones. In all, 149 individuals found in 103 different locations were investigated. Several variables were selected for the classification and basic statistical analyses. Some variables were compared with indicators from standard Moravian cemeteries. Our results indicate that there is a significant similarity between pit burials and burial-ground burials, more evident in female skeletons. These similarities can primarily be observed in the demographic profile, the ritual placement of the individuals, the grave items present (especially in terms of frequency and distribution according to demographic parameters, and in the frequency of individuals per feature. The phenomenon of pit burials seems to be merely an imitation of the standard burials typical for this period, more significantly for females. A possible explanation is that more complex rules in funeral practices were applied for males than for females. If a woman was buried in a settlement pit, the circumstances of her funeral did not differ from a grave burial. This is in contrast with males, who display fewer ritual aspects when they are buried in settlements.
