Description
  • Does one understand life by means of words, or does one live in order to understand words? In both a rational and irrational way, words illuminate other things as well as other words and can simultaneously refer to themselves. This property of self-reference, which causes various logical and semantic paradoxes, is treated in this paper not as any obstacle for understanding but as its inception. Referring to these general topics the author deals with the lives and works of a famous Czech (though German-writing) novelist Franz Kafka (1883-1924) and a virtually unknown Austrian philosopher and mathematician Friedrich Waismann (1896-1959), who was not just a representative of logical empiricism, but also a notable interpreter of Kafka.
