Description
  • Though Esarhaddon (681-669 B.C.) was not the first-born son of Sennacherib, his father ultimately chose him as his successor in the royal office. The fact that Sennacherib changed his mind twice with respect to the appointment of his heir apparent was probably one of the factors behind his assassination. Esarhaddon, who was not present in the capital at the moment of Sennacherib?s death, nevertheless reacted promptly and put forward his claim by means of a show of military force. This proved to be the right action at the right time, but down to the end of Essarhaddon?s reign the documents show how strongly was he preoccupied with the problem of smooth transition of royal power to the chosen successor after his own death.
