Description	The control of a process or a complex machine whether supervised by an operator or fully automated, often and repeatedly faces a seemingly easy problem : to decide if and when to change process settings, i.e. parameters influencing operation of the process with all of its possible numerous control loops. Problem is that some of the well-mentioned readjustments of parameters can deteriorate the process quality. Furthermore if the decision results in %22do changes%22, variety of consequent decisions must be made : what to change and to what extent. While the basic decision problem is discrete by nature, consequent actions may be considered as continuous decision-making often formally coinciding with control. Two examples from the metal processing industry - namely from the rolling mill domain - illustrate the problems and possible solutions.
