Description
  • There is a vast literature comparing various countries but only a negligible amount of literature which provides integrated and general overview of comparison. Comparison as a method, comparative research, comparative design, etc. are concepts which are used in various situations and its definition is not unified. But it is clear that, comparing countries and its economical level is an up-to-dated problem. Global financial and economic crisis, which recently started, even deepen the differences and therefore arises a question why in some countries are impacts more distinct than in other countries. But the aim of this work is not to provide a clear answer to this question - it is clear that it is difficult to find a simple explanation. The main aim of this work is to provide insight to a methodological apparatus of comparative economics as discipline and to demonstrate example of comparing economic performance in connection with some significant and meaningful indicators which are widel y used - GDP, HDI, EFI and EPI. The GDP is probably the most frequently used indicator but it does not cover all important aspects of economic situation. The HDI does not take into account any freedom or environmental considerations and it indicates trends from national rather than global perspective. Therefore, in the article is described a modification of the HDI index by taking into account economic freedom and environmental issues. An impact of this modification is analysed with respect to keeping logical relation between welfare and poverty. The empirical analysis showed that considering economic freedom and environmental issues as part of social welfare leads to consideration that social welfare deteriorates.
