Description	The aim of this paper is to characterise NGOs and to describe the operational environment of NGOs and the availability of bank loans in the Czech Republic. NGOs are typically value-based organizations which depend on charitable donations and voluntary service. Two main categories of NGOs can be distinguished: operational and advocacy NGOs. NGOs raise funds through two principal means: through the charging of fees for the delivery of services or the creation of commercial ventures designed to generate a stream of earned income or through donations and grants. As a supplemental source of financing, NGOs can also use bank loans. At the beginning of 1990s, NGOs could use loans as an alternative source of their financing. But as a result of the sectoral breakdown of loans, the availability of loans provided to NGOs (and to nonfinancial companies as well) has sharply decreased.
