Description
  • The commercial ultrafiltration membranes were modified with different types of polymeric nanofibres to gain additional functionality in water treatment applications. Biocide properties of the membrane surface were achieved by adding electrospun nanofibre structures containing various forms of silver. Special additives change the viscosity and homogeneity of the spinning solution, and therefore limit the amount of silver particles that can be added. The optimal electrospinning conditions were determined for maximum silver content as well as minimal leaching from the nanofibres. The best results were obtained for high soluble Silver Nitrate and Silver Benzoate as silver nanoparticles precursors. Direct nanofibre deposition and thermal pressure lamination are two verified procedures to prepare composite ultrafiltration membranes with antibacterial properties. The biocidity such modified membranes was confirmed by cultivation techniques and respirometry. All results show that this is a promising methodology to modify the ultrafiltration membranes by the silver nanoparticles containing nanofibers. Furthermore, the method can be used to modify the different filtration materials to reduce biofouling.
