Description
  • Nitinol is a particular shape memory alloy (SMA) belonging to the group of so called smart materials as it exhibits functional properties such as superelasticity and thermally induced shape memory effect. Tubular weft knitted and braided textiles made of nitinol wires are nowadays commonly applied as medical implants. In this work, we report on experimental study dealing with radial compressive properties of tubular weft knitted and braided nitinol textiles. Radial compressive properties are here assumed as an estimate of radial stiffness, which is an important parameter of medical implants. Firstly, technology of manufacture of these textiles is explained. Secondly, experimental method for radial stiffness estimation is described. Thirdly, experiments carried out with the aim to identify the influence of temperature and nitinol composition on radial stiffness are reported. Finally, experimental results are discussed and rationalized with reference to deformation processes occurring in SMAs. It was shown that martensitic transformation occurring in SMAs strongly influence the radial stiffness. Hence, the radial stiffness is highly temperature dependent. Moreover, it was concluded that nitinol wires with Austenite start temperature slightly below the body temperature exhibiting R-phase transformation are good candidates for medical applications as it shows plastic-like behaviour at room temperature while recovering shape and elastic behaviour upon heating to body temperature.
