Description
  • All living organisms actively produce and use electromagnetic fields. Exposure to external magnetic fluxes, however, may result in additional impacts on bacterial cells that could reveal further interesting effects of magnetic fields. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of a quasi-stationary (rotating) electromagnetic field on bacteria (Rhodococcus Erythropolis) and to investigate its effect on growth and ability to biodegrade. At a frequency of 500 Hz, magnetic flux density reaches about 20 mT of its effective value. A batch recirculation bioreactor with an initial phenol concentration of around 300 mg/l was used to investigate the influence of a magnetic field on biodegradation. Microorganisms demonstrated enhanced oxidation of phenol in comparison with a control sample with no magnetic field.
