Description
  • Application of the Reliability centered maintenance (RCM) is effective tool, but it shouldn't be one way process. There are many possibilities how to use the results secondarily. RCM requires among other things the production losses equation (PLE) as input. The PLE is a function of economic losses per time during shut-down. If the time of production stopping (caused by failure or preventive maintenance) is know, it's easy to calculate the total value of the production loss. In general it is the integral of this function. The PLE should take into account all the important parameters of the production process, such as the redundancy, the spares and their count, the sales of products etc. The RCM analysis uses this equation as an invariant fact and the equipment maintenance is optimized on the basis of it. The RCM analysis is conducted dominantly on the strategic facilities (it's mean that production losses during the shut-down are huge) because of the substantial time and knowledge demands. The setting of the production process parameters - concretely the already mentioned redundancy, the spares and their count - is usually done intuitively without quantitative analysis. But selected parameters, which are inputs/outputs of RCM, are directly applicable to production losses optimizing. Of course, it is necessary to take into account the costs of corrective actions. This is essentially a mean time between failures, preventive maintenance intervals, repair time and maintenance time. The article describes the context of inputs and outputs of quantitative analysis and proposed procedures will be presented on a real example. The expected result of optimizing is PLE and total costs decreasing.
