Description
| - The aim of the contribution was to present results of a comparative study of steel samples with different surface treatment by using Barkhausen noise analysis (BNA) and X-ray diffraction technique. Case-hardened and nitrided components for car industry made from rolled steel sheet C10 with case-depth from 0.15 to 0.25 mm are investigated. Since case-hardening leads to hard case and soft core formation, this treatment increases wear resistance and fatigue strength of machine parts. Nitriding, in addition, increases corrosion resistance and reduces friction coefficient. Material characterization was carried out with a Barkhausen noise device; X-ray diffraction measurement of surface residual stresses was done as well. Depth profile of measured characteristics was obtained in the case of one nitrided and one case-hardened sample by step by step layers’ removing using electrolytical etching. Owing to the complex shape of investigated samples, measurements carried out on selected segments areas were compared. Barkhausen noise software ViewScan was used to measure magnetizing frequency sweep (MFS) and magnetizing voltage sweep (MVS). Barkhausen noise software MicroScan was employed to determine root mean square (RMS) value of the samples. The aim of performed measurements was to find relation between case-hardening depth (CHD) and some other parameters obtained by Barkhausen noise analysis like RMS or full width half maximum (FWHM) of Barkhausen signal. Values of X-ray diffraction peaks FWHM were compared with those obtained from BNA in order to find relation between measured quantities.
