Description
  • The contribution is focused on the recent experience of the authors with industrial applications of X-ray diffraction residual stress measurement and Barkhausen noise analysis for assessing effects of grinding, rolling and other surface treatment processes. Since any interaction with work-piece during machining is realized over its free surface, the state of residual stress and level of magnetoelastic parameter in surface layers has a predominant impact on the reliability and service life of machine components. As any process of machining and surface treatment is accompanied by inhomogeneous plastic deformation leading to formation of RS, their volume distribution is of great importance. The Barkhausen noise analysis allows a simple, fast, real time, and non-destructive testing of the level of residual stresses in ground and rolled machined parts, e.g. camshafts, and checking the homogeneity of the surface heat treatment such as case-hardening and nitriding. Nevertheless, this output inspection needs to be verified and confirmed by X-ray diffraction residual stress measurements.
