Description
| - The P/M made VANADIS 6 cold work steel was plasma nitrided at various combinations of the temperature and dwell time. Before the plasma nitriding, the material consists of the matrix containing both the twinned and the dislocation martensite, and two types of carbides. The first type was identified as the MC-phase and the second one as M7C3-carbide. Plasma nitriding led to the increase of both the surface hardness and the microhardness, due to the nitrogen saturation of thin near surface region. Firstly, the martensite is saturated by nitrogen, up to the solid solubility limit. If the solid solubility limit is exceeded, various nitrides like the Fe4N- and Fe3N-phase are formed. When the highest processing temperature and longer time are applied, also the CrN-phase formation results from the processing. The occurrence of nitrogen enriched region at the surface increases the wear resistance. On the other hand, the fracture toughness drops down dramatically.
