Description
- The paper investigates reasons that distract consumers from buying environmentally friendly products. It is based on qualitative analysis of six focus groups (N=39) that were carried with respondents from different consumer groups (mothers on maternity leave, seniors, administrators, businessmen, university students, and environmental consultants). The results reflect similar themes that emerged in all of the groups. The research suggested that an important role in consumer decision-making play the lack of trust in the concept of sustainable consumption and personal consumers’ history. The respondents supposed that for their higher time and financial investment they often obtained more expansive and less effective products with a questionable environmental benefit. Because they did not question an importance of responsible environmental behavior, they took a stand of “acceptable sustainable consumer behavior”, when they acted pro-environmentally when it was easy for them and ignored responsible choices in other areas of their consumer behavior.
