Description
(cs)
  • Brown coal has been the most important indigenous energy source in the Czech Republic for the last century. Brown coal has been exploited in 2 coal basins located in the NW part of the country on an industrial scale for more than 150 years, which has had enormous environmental impacts especially concerning the way of open pit mining. In 1950’s the first attempts to reclaim the land affected by coal mining were made. Since then the ways of land reclamation have been explored and gradually improved developing in a proven methodology taking into account relevant local conditions. At present, the reclamation process is considered not only as simple soil reclamation but rather as a complex set of mining, technological and biological methods aiming at developing nature-close ecosystems. This paper broadly outlines this reclamation methodology developed in the Czech Republic and also provides the latest results of current research projects.
