| Description
| - The area of the North-West Bohemia (the Czech Republic) is a significant example of human impact on the environment. Intensive open-cast mining, heavy and chemical industry and huge dam structures are irreversibly changing the shape and function of the surrounding landscape. Another factor influencing the development of the landscape was the political situation after the Second World War, when many German inhabitants were deported back to Germany. This led to strong depopulation of the Czech borderlands resulting in the disappearance of many municipalities located in the borderlands. All the information about the above described phenomena is contained in many historical sources - old maps, aerial imagery, old photographs, historical books and the older generation's memories. Within our project we work on bringing all this information together in a unified information system offering the user all the information about vanished towns and villages, land-use and settlement development, landscape transfigurations and other descriptive information. Within this paper, significant examples of how historical data may be processed and offered for use by other scientists or the wider public are described. The base of all the analyses performed in this project is the careful processing of old maps and aerial imagery as different types of old maps (since 1790 to 1981) require different handling and processing. Different types of visualization and analysis are performed using the processed data. Here we may encounter digital terrain model reconstructions and analysis, land-use and town/village center reconstructions, vanished building identifications and many more. All the processed data are accessible to the public in two different methods. The more popular way is in the form of an interactive web mapping application, where the user can visualize, overlay and print the desired data. For more skilled users, the data are available in a form of ArcGIS Server Rest Layers.
