  • The aim of this publication is to present the inter-linguistic and intercultural communication as an important phenomenon of modern European society in the 21st century, reflected in the field of primary education, where it brings new conditions, challenges, problems and prospects. The issue has been elaborated with regard to broad philosophical-historical and social context in relation to the development of view on language teaching and acquisition. Attention is paid to the most important aspects that affect foreign language acquisition in young learners, both from the perspective of teachers and their pupils, including foreign pupils' point of view. The authors approach the issue in accordance with current principles of European language policy drawing upon the European model of language teaching and its application to educational practice in primary schools. Following several years of research and teaching experience the authors aim to contribute to laying scientific basis for curriculum of modern language teaching in teacher training faculties in the primary school teacher training study programs, as the current Czech primary school teachers' qualification lacks ever more necessary language related pedagogical competence for foreign language teaching and teaching Czech as a second language with regard to foreign pupils' needs in the Czech primary school environment.
