  • Herbicides are hazardous to human health due to their toxicity or carcinogenity. Certain compounds with slow degradation can be accumulated in soil and ground water, and subsequently in plant products. Two main analytical methods - liquid chromatography and immunodetection for determination of herbicide residues are not suitable for routine screening of great number of samples since they are expensive and time consuming. Chemical methods are sensitive and precious, but biological methods better reflect the real biological effect of herbicide residues present in the sample. The goal was to develop an electrochemical biosensor for detection of photosynthetic herbicides based on Photosystem II (PS II) complex (Koblizek at al. 2002). The PSII complex wasisolated from the thermophilic cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus.
